GDPR overview

What you'll need

  • Nothing — start here if you're setting up guest Wi-Fi for EU visitors or need GDPR compliance generally

Steps

  1. GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) governs how you collect and use personal data — including the email, phone, and name your campaigns capture at login — from anyone in the EU.
  2. It applies based on whose data you're processing, not where your business is located — a US venue with EU tourists logging into its Wi-Fi is still subject to it.
  3. MyWiFi gives you the controls; compliance itself is your responsibility as the data controller. The two controls that matter most:
    • Opt-in consent — an explicit checkbox guests must tick before their data is used for marketing (see Opt-in form)
    • Terms & Conditions / Privacy Policy — shown at login, configured on the Advanced tab
  4. Enable both if you serve EU guests, or if you're not sure — it's a safer default than not, especially if you're managing campaigns for clients who haven't thought about this themselves.

Best practice: read Who does the GDPR apply to? first — it covers which venue types get caught by it most often, including hotels, airports, tourist-area retail, and conference venues.
