MyWiFi glossary — every term a reseller needs

Every piece of jargon you'll meet in MyWiFi — the dashboard, these help articles, or a hardware vendor's admin panel — defined in plain language, in one place. Skim it once and the rest of the platform reads easily.

What you'll need

  • Nothing — this is a reference page. Keep it open in a tab during your first week.

Steps

  1. Skim the terms once, top to bottom — they're grouped by where you'll meet them.
  2. When any help article uses a term you don't recognize, come back here.
  3. Share this page with new team members and client staff — it's written for non-engineers.

The guest experience

  • Captive portal — the mini-browser window a phone opens automatically the moment a guest joins a WiFi network. Everything your guest sees during login happens inside it.
  • Splash page — the branded login page guests see in that window. In MyWiFi you build it in the campaign builder.
  • SSID — the WiFi network name a guest sees in their phone's WiFi list when connecting.
  • Login method — how a guest identifies themselves on the splash page: Email, SMS, WhatsApp, Free Wi-Fi, Passcode, or Credit Card.
  • Walled garden — the short list of domains a guest can reach before logging in, so the splash page and login providers can load. If the splash page comes up blank, the walled garden is the first thing to check.
  • Opt-in — the guest's explicit marketing-consent checkbox captured at login. Marketing sends respect it automatically.

The platform

  • Campaign — a splash page plus its login methods, branding, and post-login behavior, reusable across locations. One campaign can serve many venues.
  • Location — one physical venue in MyWiFi, with its own devices, campaigns, and guest data.
  • Device — the router or access point at a venue that MyWiFi talks to.
  • Contacts — the guest database: every person who has logged in through any of your campaigns, with their visits, devices, and consent status.
  • Journey — a multi-step automated marketing sequence (trigger, delays, messages, branches) that runs per guest. Built in Automation > Journeys.
  • Credit Wallet — the prepaid balance that metered sends (SMS, WhatsApp, email, AI) draw from, with optional auto-reload.

Networking terms you'll meet during hardware setup

  • RADIUS / WISPr — the standard protocols WiFi hardware uses to ask MyWiFi's cloud whether a guest may go online. Your router speaks them; MyWiFi answers.
  • MAC address — the hardware identifier of a device (router or guest phone). MyWiFi uses it to recognize returning guests and registered equipment.
  • CNAME — a DNS record that points your own domain name at MyWiFi's servers. Custom domains for your dashboard and guest portal are set up with two of them.

Messaging terms

  • Carrier registration (10DLC) — the mandatory US carrier vetting of your business before it may send SMS. It's reviewed by the carriers, not instant.
  • BYO Twilio / BYO SendGrid — connecting your own Twilio or SendGrid account so sending runs and bills under your account instead of MyWiFi's managed pool.
  • Managed number — a dedicated SMS/WhatsApp number MyWiFi provisions and manages for you, as the alternative to bringing your own.

Reseller business terms

  • White-label — reskinning the dashboard with your own brand, domain, and colors so clients never see MyWiFi.
  • Client sub-user — a restricted login you create for a client, scoped to their own locations and modules.
  • Retargeting pixel — a tracking snippet that lets an ad platform later show ads to guests who logged in through your splash page.

Note: every term above links to a full how-to somewhere in this knowledge base — use the search bar with the term name, or start from Your first 15 minutes.
