Set up SMS login (carrier registration)

What you'll need

  • A Stripe-billed account — SMS/WhatsApp carrier registration (the mandatory US carrier vetting of your business before it may send SMS) is only available on the new billing platform
  • If your account is billed on Recurly instead, connect your own Twilio account on the Apps page rather than using this flow
  • Your business's legal name, EIN/tax ID, business address, a contact email and phone number, and the industry/vertical your business falls under (US carriers require this for SMS brand registration)

Steps

  1. Go to Account SettingsMessaging (/user/editprofile#messaging).
  2. Open the WhatsApp Sending Account card — SMS and WhatsApp share the same underlying carrier registration and managed number.
  3. If managed SMS/WhatsApp isn't set up yet, you'll see a prompt to complete SMS setup before you can search and purchase a managed number. This registers your business with the SMS carriers (brand + campaign registration — carrier terminology, unrelated to MyWiFi campaigns) — required before any managed number can send. 4. Enter your business's legal name, tax ID, address, contact email/phone, and vertical when prompted, and submit.
  5. Registration is reviewed by the carriers, not instantly approved — check back on the Messaging tab for your registration status.

Best practice: use your business's real legal details, exactly as registered with your tax authority. Mismatched details are the most common reason carrier registration gets rejected or delayed.
