Choose a trigger for your journey

What you'll need

Steps

  1. When creating or editing a journey, open the trigger picker. Today it offers five triggers:
  • Guest captured — a guest logs in through any of your campaigns and hasn't yet been captured by this journey.
  • No return — a guest hasn't come back within a set number of days.
  • First-time visitor — a guest is logging in for the very first time ever on your network.
  • Returning visitor — a guest has logged in before and is back.
  • Birthday — the guest's birthday, if you collect date of birth on your login form.
  1. Choose the trigger that matches when you want this journey to start, then continue building the rest of the sequence.
  2. A guest only enrolls in a journey once per trigger match, going forward from when you publish the journey — it doesn't scan backward for guests who already matched before the journey existed.

Best practice: "First-time visitor" and "Guest captured" are easy to confuse — first-time visitor fires the moment someone is brand new to your network, while guest captured fires any time a guest logs in and hasn't been captured by that specific journey yet. Pick first-time visitor for true welcome sequences.
